THE NATIONAL SPORTING LIBRARY NEWSLETTER ARCHIVES

Newsletters from 2000 to 2009 are now available to read online or download. The Library's newsletter, published four times a year, features articles on current and historic issues, book reviews, and information on library collections, activities and services. All donors to the Library of $50 and above will receive the newsletter.

Starting with the Summer 2009 newsletter, most book reviews will be posted and can be read online on the Library's website.

NSL Spring 2010 Newsletter

SPRING 2010 The cover story is the exhibition, Lives of Dogs, Viewed Through Literature, Art, and Ephemera. Other stories include booksigning by Julie Campbell for The Horse in Virginia, lecture by Patricia Junker on Winslow Homer's angling art, announcement of 2010-2011 John H. Daniels Fellows, Daniels fellow Samuel Snyder, Middleburg Spring races, election of Donald P. Brennan to Board of Directors, and story on Curatorial Assistant, Brenna Elliott.

WINTER 2009/2010 The cover story is the the fly fishing symposium, A River Never Sleeps: Conservation, History, & the Fly Fishing River. Other stories include the book exhibition, Afternoon Delights; obituaries for Robert H. Smith, Richard "Dick" Francis, and Sandra Wright; fall lectures by Thomas Altherr, JoAnn Dawson, and M.L. Biscotti; and profile of Daniels Fellow, Glenye Cain Oakford.

FALL 2009 The cover story is the groundbreaking for the National Sporting Art Museum on September 19, 2009. Other stories include summer and fall Daniels Fellows, recently-donated paintings by Henri DeLattre and Franklin Voss, and changes in NSL staff.

SUMMER 2009 The lead stories are the obituary for former NSL Director, Peter Winants, and an article by Daniels Fellow Pia Cuneo about the NSL's recently-acquired 16th-century horsemanship book, Gründlicher Bericht des Zeumens. The newsletter also announcements the departure of President & CEO Nancy H. Parsons for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Other articles include recent lectures by Judy Richter and Jill Deiss and John H. Daniels Fellow Horace Laffaye, M.D.

SPRING 2009 The lead story is the announcement of the 2009-2010 John H. Daniels Fellows. Other stories include the March 12 opening of the exhibition, The Story of Harness Racing by Currier and Ives, and the February 21 Public Lecture by Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr.

WINTER 2008/2009 The lead story is the arrival in November at the National Sporting Library of the Felicia Warburg Rogan Collection of Sporting Art. This issue also includes articles on the donation by Mrs. Henry Weldon of a 17th-century Dutch painting, Horse in a Landscape; the falconry event in November; John H. Daniels Fellows, Amy Freund and Susan McHugh; the release of F. Turner Reuter, Jr.'s Animal and Sporting Artists in America, and a review by Douglas Lees of Mike Heck's Spring Creek Strategies.

FALL 2008 The lead story of the fall issue is the opening of the exhibition, The Voss Family, Artists of American Sporting Life. Other articles include Dr. Betsee Parker's luncheon for the Ivy Circle and Chairman's Council at Huntland, the Reuter book patrons' dinner at Berrywick, John H. Daniels Fellows Perky Beisel and Mike Huggins, and the obituary for NSL Board member, Gordon G. Smith.

SUMMER 2008 The lead story of the summer issue is the Library's acquisition of a sketchbook by American artist Paul Brown (1893-1958). Other stories include the bequests and donations of art from Mr. and Mrs. William Abel Smith and Elizabeth "John D." Jeffords; Election of Gordon Smith and Betsee Parker to the Board of Directors; the upcoming exhibition, The Voss Family, Artists of American Sporting Life, past lectures, and John H. Daniels Fellow, Martin Wallen, Ph.D.

SPRING 2008
The lead story of the spring issue is the planning of the Museum of Sporting Art at Vine Hill. The issue includes articles about recent bequests and donations of art to the NSL, the acquisition of a rare 16th-century hunting text by the Flemish artist Johannes Stradanus, a profile of John H. Daniels Fellow Noel Mullins, and a tribute to longtime volunteer, George Hottel.

WINTER 2007/2008
The announcement of the 2007-2008 John H. Daniels Fellows is the lead story of this issue, including a profile of Elizabeth Redkey and her research on the U.S. Remount Service. This issue also features news about the planning of the Museum of Sporting Art at Vine Hill, new NSL staff members, the Munnings symposium, and a tribute to Eve Prime Fout (1929-2007).

 
FALL 2007
The 2007 Coaching Weekend, in all its splendor and pageantry, is the focus of this issue. Twenty-six four-in-hand coaches from around the country participated in what turned out to be a glorious weekend of events, ranging from receptions at the Library and private lunches to the Saturday evening Coaching Gala at Llangollen, where Peter Duchin kept guests swirling to jazz tunes.
 
 
 
 
SUMMER 2007
This annual donors' issue covers the Brooks McCormick bequest of more than 500 sporting books to the Library. This Chicago philanthropist was the consummate sportsman, and the NSL is grateful for such rare titles at a 1904 edition of Master of Game, one of 10 special folio-size editions, after an original 14th century manuscript by Edward, Second Duke of York.
SPRING 2007
Read about the extraordinary exhibition of paintings by Sir Alfred Munnings, on view at the Library until March 2008. The exhibition "Reflections on a Life with Horses" is part of an international effort celebrating the centennial of Paul Mellon's birth.
WINTER 2007
In this issue the National Sporting Library inaugurates the John H. Daniels Fellowship, with Elizabeth Tobey as its first Fellow.
FALL 2006
The magnificent collection of books once belonging to Capt. Vladimir S. Littauer is featured in this newsletter. In the summer 2004 issue, Paul Cronin wrote an outstanding biography of this consummate horseman (see below).
SUMMER 2006
Sport enthusiasts Dean and Louise Bedford built a collection of books with titles that aptly reflected the passions that drove them--there are titles on foxhunting, beagling, driving, steeplechase, terrier showing and breeding. Thanks to the generosity of Cricket and Deane Bedford, the NSL now has these impressive sporting books catalogued on its shelves.
SPRING 2006
At a competitive Sotheby's auction, the Library successfully bid on sporting books once the property of His Royal Highness, the Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, thanks to the generosity of an NSL board member.
